I have found that tendency in quite a few young adult novels. I wonder if people are trying to not include a level of violence, drama, or some other quality because they are aiming it at a slightly younger audience--like cutting out the blood from a gun fight in a PG-13 rated movie. I know that when I read Red Rising initially I was really angry that it wasn't considered a Young Adult Novel because the reading level and style matched the YA section. Eventually, I came to realize that it included a level of violence that publishers don't seem comfortable including in a YA novel.<br /><br />All that being said, based off the books you associated with it.
